| Pocono Mountains/Endless Mountains
Scranton, in the heart of the Poconos, was once considered a 'boomtown'
because it was a leading producer of iron - this led to the creation
of an extensive network of railways and magnificent train stations
- today this legacy can be experienced by taking a rail tour or
visiting world-renowned historic sites like the one at Steamtown.
The railroad experience in the Poconos doesn't stop there, however
- there are tours that go through pristine countryside and into
beautiful small towns, including Jim Thorpe.
Stourbridge
Line
After a mile or so of industrial sites in Honesdale, this one and
a half hour trip winds along the Delaware River through rural woods,
meadows, and marshes.
Lehigh Gorge Scenic Railway
Lehigh Gorge Scenic Railway operates several trips of varying lengths, all departing
from a beautifully-maintained depot in downtown Jim Thorpe. The
train runs along water for most of its trip, and the line cuts through
mountainous terrain, making this a particularly lovely ride.
Steamtown

Nearly 30 steam locomotives are on the grounds, as well as an extensive
collection of other rolling stock and railroading artifacts. Steamtown
is staffed by National Park Service personnel as well as volunteers.

emphasis on the railroad.
